French missing object constructions

چکیده
This paper discusses a class of French à-infinitival constructions, where the missing direct object corresponds to an external argument, either being antecedent noun in attributive use, or else raised argument subject predication tough construction.  We investigate internal and properties these constructions show that (i) construction displays passive-like (ii) control raising verbs may intervene between marker à verb, as shown on basis corpus study. observe while whole behaves like passive erstwhile logical ends up promoted is still accessible for control, both from within à-infinitive outside. Building Grover (1995), we analyse double subjects by way two-step passivisation, valency lexically without concomitant demotion. Raising secondary will make it available à, which finally promotes thereby completing passivisation effect. The present analysis thus captures full set unified fashion, capturing its extended domain locality.

Missing-object Constructions: Lexical and Constructional Variation
Cross-linguistically, missing object constructions are sometimes analyzed as involving long-distance dependencies, similar to the dependencies found in whquestion or relative clause constructions. Other missing object constructions have been analyzed as involving complex predicate formation. We propose that both classes of missing object constructions are found in English, exemplified by the ca...
متن کاملBreaking Verbs in French: Two Intransitive Constructions
In Cognitive Linguistics, meaning resides in conceptual-ization and grammar is seen as being meaningful. Cog-nitive semantics provides an array of well-motivated de-scriptive constructs allowing a revealing description ofsemantic and grammatical structure. متن کاملVerb Semantics and Double Object Constructions A constraint-based approach to Double Object Constructions in German
This paper treats verbs of diverse syntactic and semantic origins that enter into preposition-less double object constructions in German. It develops a fine-grained semantics within a lexicalist approach to grammar. Three semantic components are recognized: situation schemata which represent situational knowledge in the form of a matrix of abstract participant constellations; the attribute desi...
متن کاملBuilding a computational lexicon of verbal syntactic constructions in French
We describe a computational lexicon which encodes verbal syntactic constructions in French. The aim of the project is to encode into a standard formalism the valency lexicon for French initiated in the eighties by M. Salkoff and A. Valli and continued since then. The whole computational lexicon will include about six thousand verbal entries with a list of the arguments of each verb, the restric...
